Although in general we live in a throw away society it is not always the best policy when it comes to sorting out your wardrobe. Contrary to what most people believe that a Style Consultant will do when she comes to review your wardrobe my belief is that you should think very carefully before you discard any items especially if they were expensive.
Often with a little careful analysis it is possible to get an idea of why you have not worn a certain item. Often it is something as simple as the length being wrong or the fit being not quite right. It’s amazing how a few adjustments by a dressmaker can make a huge difference to the way you feel about an outfit so before you sling it out ask yourself ‘What exactly is it about this that I don’t like? if you’re not sure ask a friend’s opinion. If it is the colour can you dye it? if it is the general look can you change it by changing the buttons, removing a pocket, adding some beading or other embellishment?
Throw aways should be those items that are worn out or damaged. If a stain is a problem on an otherwise good item check at the cleaners if they can remove it or see if there is some way you can hide it by adding trimming or jewellery or maybe replacing a section or remodelling the garment.
Finally, the longest lasting clothes are usually in natural fabrics such as wool, linen and silk and it is always wise to choose styles that are more classic than fashion trendy for the more expensive pieces. Accessories can always be used to bring a simple shape right up to date but a way out design is a lot more risky and short lived.
